Associate Dean Eric Hamilton has been an enthusiastic advocate and developer of technology tools for creating better 'sightlines' to help see and understand learning. He believes that we are entering the most exciting era of learning and technology any of us have seen. He will open the conference with some comments on the importance of distributed learning and distributed cognition.

Dr. Scardamalia is the co-author (with Carl Bereiter) of the book Surpassing Ourselves: An inquiry into the nature and implementation of expertise. While action research is not mentioned in the book, it provides one of the best answers to the question of why one might engage in a program of lifelong action research.

Session 2: Action Research with Educators - Developing Professional Connections

Session Opening Comments: Dr. Jack Whitehead (Presenting Virtually)

Dr. Jack Whitehead (along with Jean McNiff) authored two of the books on action research that all of the students have read many times over this past year-- You and Your Action Research Project and, All you need to know about Action Research. These books have helped students learn how to develop and value their own knowledge and theories as they engage in their action research.

Session 3: Action Research in Industry and with Organizations - Sharing Practice, Building knowledge, Developing Communities

Session Opening Comments: John Smith (Presenting Virtually)

John Smith is one of the authors of Digital Habitats: stewarding technology for communities (along with Etienne Wenger and Nancy White). This insightful book helped many of the students understand how to use emerging technology tools to help develop community and knowledge building in their workplaces.
